Singing is a natural part of all of us; we all respond to music. Gaining skills to express ourselves musically can be an important builder of a young person’s self-confidence. Many students come to MYTP afraid to sing out; we aim, however, to give them the tools to feel good about their abilities, and through this, we are able to help build a sense of self-esteem. Singing is not only about winning competitions and getting the big solo. It is about having every participant working hard to feel they are giving their best effort to the group to create a synergy that makes each singer excel. This sense of group work is the foundation for our classes. Students who are still building confidence are encouraged to join group vocal classes to help them gain the tools to feel more secure when singing. Self expression is an important aspect of these classes. Students are taught to strengthen the voice they already have through many songs and vocal exercises.

Private Vocal

More About Katie, Nicole, and Rachel

Katie is one of MYTP’s resident Musical Directors and a Montessori Teacher. She has worked as a Director, Camp Director, Musical Director and Teacher in various companies from her hometown of Milton (MYTP, Montessori School of Milton, House of Chords) and in the Kingston area (KYAC). She earned her degree in Music (Hons.) at Queen’s University in 2014 and her MATEC Montessori Certification for both Casa (2020) and Lower Elementary (2023) levels. At MYTP, she teaches private and group voice lessons as well as musical direction for the Theatre Drama Company. Katie has been actively involved with MYTP from its inception, as both a student and instructor. Most of her lifelong friends are from her years of theatre involvement and she credits her love of the stage to this. You can usually find her on stage right at the theatre, putting on microphones and keeping actors on time with their music. When Katie is not at MYTP she teaches Lower Elementary at Stirling Montessori Academy in Milton.

Nicole has been part of the MYTP family for well over a decade and is thrilled to be part of the creative team! Her journey with MYTP began as a student and has evolved to include roles as an assistant, assistant director, camp director, and musical director. Nicole’s passion for theatre and creativity shines through in every aspect of her life. She graduated from Queen’s University with a Bachelor of Education in 2021, and has been working as an elementary teacher ever since. Nicole’s teaching career has taken her around the globe, but she is overjoyed to be back home at MYTP, doing what she loves most. Nicole credits her time at MYTP with some of her best memories and the development of essential skills, which she is eager to pass on to her students at MYTP and beyond.

Rachel is so excited to be the instructor for the Jr. Drama Club! She started theatre at the age of 7, and has been hooked ever since. She spent 10 years with M.Y.T.P. as a performer, including 5 years of assisting before she graduated. Her M.Y.T.P. credits include: Alice In Wonderland (Tweedle-Dee), Oliver (Strawberry Seller), The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley (Ensemble), Into The Woods (Mother Goose, Gretel, Cinderella’s Mother), The Jungle Book (Kaa), Big (Mrs. Baskin), Willy Wonka (Mr. Bucket, Mrs. Beauregard), Peter Pan (Wendy), Doctor Dolittle (Pushmi), Mary Poppins (Bert), Shrek (Dragon), Mulan (Lin), Dear Edwina (Kelli), The Little Mermaid (Aquata), High School Musical (Martha), Aladdin (Ensemble) and Frozen (Elsa). Rachel is a graduate of the Music Theatre-Performance program at St. Lawrence College. She is also a recipient of a Bachelor (Hons.) In Performing Arts: Acting from Atlantic Technological University located in Sligo, Ireland. Her post-secondary theatre credits include: Exhibition: A Collective Archive (Featured Soloist), Marry Me A Little (Featured Soloist), Pippin (Player), Red Letter Day (Felicity in the Canadian Premiere), Cabaret (Victor) and Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again (Grandma/Ensemble). Rachel is so looking forward to fostering the love of theatre in her students that she experienced at their age. She can’t wait to help these performers reach their full potential in this fun-filled extended program!
